Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah praised External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to Bangladesh to attend the funeral of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, calling Dhaka an old friend. Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Abdullah said that Jaishankar’s visit would strengthen India-Bangladesh relations. He said, “I am happy that our External Affairs Minister went there and attended Khaleda Zia’s funeral. Bangladesh is our old friend, and we should take this forward. This will strengthen our relations.” On Wednesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, during his visit to Dhaka, expressed condolences on behalf of the people and government of India on the passing of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. He also attended the funeral of the former Bangladeshi Prime Minister. Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, wrote in a post that “Hon’ble External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar expressed condolences on behalf of the Government of India and Bangladesh on the passing of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka. He acknowledged her contributions to democracy and expressed hope for strengthening relations after the democratic transition in Bangladesh through the upcoming elections (February 2026).” New Delhi wants to strengthen its ties with neighboring Bangladesh ahead of the elections scheduled for February. On Wednesday, Jaishankar met with the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Khaleda Zia’s son, Tarique Rahman, in Dhaka and expressed deep condolences on behalf of India.
