Congress furious over China’s claim
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh launched a scathing attack on the central government after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi claimed to have mediated in the India-Pakistan standoff, calling it a “mockery” of New Delhi’s national security. After US President Donald Trump repeatedly claimed that Washington prevented a potential war between India and Pakistan, China also claimed its role in de-escalating tensions during the four-day conflict following Operation Sindoor. Jairam Ramesh expressed concern over China’s claim in a post, given Beijing’s close defense ties with Pakistan and its supply of weapons to Islamabad. The Congress leader wrote that President Trump has long claimed that he personally intervened to stop Operation Sindoor on May 10, 2025. He has done this 65 times on various platforms in at least seven different countries. The Prime Minister has never broken his silence on these claims made by his so-called close friend. Now the Chinese Foreign Minister has also made a similar claim and said that China also mediated. On July 4, 2025, Army Deputy Chief Lieutenant General Rahul Singh publicly stated that India was actually confronting and fighting China during Operation Sindoor. “Given that China is clearly aligned with Pakistan, the Chinese claims of mediating between India and Pakistan are alarming – not only because they directly contradict what our people have been led to believe, but also because they seem to make a mockery of our national security,” he added. Furthermore, Ramesh criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that he has engaged in negotiations with China on China’s terms. He also demanded clarification from the central government regarding the Chinese Foreign Minister’s statement. This claim must also be understood in the context of our relations with China. We have begun to re-engage with them – but unfortunately, this has been on Chinese terms. The clean chit given to China by the Prime Minister on June 19, 2020, has significantly weakened India’s negotiating position. Our trade deficit is at a record high, and most of our exports are dependent on imports from China. China’s provocative actions regarding Arunachal Pradesh continue unabated. Amidst such one-sided and hostile relations, the Indian public deserves clarity on China’s role in the abrupt halt of Operation Sindoor.
