Assam CM Sarma’s big statement on demography: ‘Hindus should have two or three children, otherwise
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stirred a new controversy by urging Hindu couples in the state to have more than one child. He cited the reason that the birth rate among Hindus is declining compared to areas dominated by religious minorities. Speaking to reporters, Sarma said that the birth rate is higher in minority-dominated areas, while it is continuously falling among Hindus. He said that the rate of childbirth is higher in areas dominated by religious minorities. The rate of childbirth is decreasing among Hindus. There is a difference. The Chief Minister said that this is why he has appealed to Hindu families to have more children. Sarma said that this is why we are urging Hindu people not to stop at one child and have at least two children. Those who are capable can even have three children. He further added that we urge Muslim people not to have seven or eight children, while we urge Hindus to have more children. Otherwise, there will be no one to take care of the Hindu households. Earlier, on December 27, Sarma had also spoken about the population trends in the state and said that the population of Miya Muslims of Bangladeshi origin could reach 40 percent in the 2027 census. He said that when he started his political career with the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), their population was 21 percent, which increased to 31 percent in the 2011 census. Sarma had said that their population is going to exceed 40 percent. The day is not far when the future generation of Assam will see their population falling below 35 percent. He further added that they (Bangladesh) often say that Northeast India should be separated and merged with Bangladesh. They don’t need to fight a war to take Northeast India. Once their population exceeds 50 percent, it will automatically come to them. The Chief Minister also referred to the recent demand by a Congress spokesperson to reserve 48 assembly seats for Muslims and said that there was no opposition to this from the party.
