Modi government weakening the Constitution, reversing gains of social justice: Kharge

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday accused the Modi government of weakening the Constitution. Addressing the first meeting of the Congress party’s Scheduled Castes (SC) Advisory Committee, he said that the government’s policies have reversed the initiatives of previous Congress governments for the education and employment of Dalits. Kharge alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party government is weakening reservations and justifying discrimination, while the Congress had advanced social justice by enacting laws such as the Protection of Civil Rights Act (1955) and the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act (1989). He said that the reduction in jobs for Dalits through privatization and the decline in faculty recruitment in universities prove that the Modi government is promoting a ‘Manuvadi’ (casteist) mindset. He asserted that they will not allow Baba Saheb Ambedkar’s Constitution to be weakened.
