The central government waived loans of big businesses, but not those of Wayanad landslide victims: Priyanka Gandhi

Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi strongly criticized the Narendra Modi government for refusing to waive loans taken by victims of the devastating landslide in the hill district. The massive landslide partially devastated two villages, Chooralmala and Mundakkai, under the Meppadi Gram Panchayat in Wayanad. In a post on Instagram, Priyanka Gandhi criticized the central government for refusing to waive loans taken by landslide-affected families, calling the decision “shocking.” Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticized the central government for not waiving loans for Wayanad landslide victims and said it had no hesitation in waiving loans for big businesses. In a statement issued by the party, Priyanka was responding to the central government’s stand in the Kerala High Court that it could not waive the loans of Wayanad landslide victims. Priyanka, Congress MP from Wayanad, said she fully agreed with the High Court’s observation that the Centre had let the victims down in their time of need. Earlier, the Kerala High Court had also criticised the Central government for refusing to waive the loans of landslide survivors. The observation came while considering a case it had taken suo motu cognizance of. A total of 266 people were killed and 32 went missing in the landslide that occurred in Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas of Wayanad on July 30, 2024. A total of 630 people were rescued from the mudslide.
