Chidambaram hits back at Modi’s statement

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comment that India’s response to the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks was not strong enough, Congress leader and former Union Minister P. Chidambaram hit back, saying that the Manmohan Singh-led government acted with restraint, maturity, and responsibility in the face of one of India’s worst terrorist attacks. In a detailed post on X, Chidambaram said that then-Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the government acted with utmost restraint and maturity. It was the right decision and earned the world’s respect. The senior Congress leader also said that the government’s restrained approach in 2008 prevented major tensions in the region and ensured that India maintained its global standing as a responsible democracy. Prime Minister Modi said on Wednesday, “The entire country was angry after the 26/11 attacks. But India’s response should have been stronger at that time. Today’s India responds to terrorism firmly and at its source.” Modi’s statement was part of his broader comments on India’s changing approach to national security and counter-terrorism.
