New Delhi railway station stampede: Owaisi demands formation of SIT under judicial monitoring
At least 18 people were killed and more than 12 injured in a stampede at New Delhi railway station late Saturday night. The stampede broke out after a huge crowd of passengers rushed to board a train bound for Prayagraj (where the Maha Kumbh is being held) on platforms 14 and 15. Owaisi, a Lok Sabha member from Hyderabad, also demanded an independent probe into the “systemic failures” of the Indian Railways. He wrote on the social media platform ‘X’, “My deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed in the stampede at New Delhi railway station. This is a tragedy that could have been prevented.”Owaisi said, “The BJP government is trying to hide what happened. Instead, what should be done is: 1. An independent, judicially monitored SIT should be set up to investigate the tragedy. 2. An independent inquiry should be conducted into the systemic failures of Indian Railways. He said the Indian Railways is the lifeline of millions of Indians and it should not be subjected to the “mismanagement” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
