BJP’s intention behind ‘one nation one election’ is ‘one nation no election’: Venugopal

Belagavi (Karnataka). Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal on Tuesday attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government at the Center over the introduction of two bills in the Lok Sabha regarding the system of holding simultaneous elections across the country, saying that the clear intention behind ‘one nation, one election’ is ‘one nation, no election’. He termed ‘one nation, one election’ as ‘impractical’ and expressed doubts over the passage of the related bills in Parliament. Venugopal said in response to a question, “The meaning and clear intention of one nation, one election is – one nation, no election. The main agenda of the BJP is one nation, no election. They do not want a democratic process at all. To slowly destroy the entire democratic process, they are bringing this new idea of one nation one election.” The Congress General Secretary told reporters here, “Karnataka has its own specialty. Kerala has its own specialty, similarly Manipur and Jammu and Kashmir also have their own specialty. Unity in diversity is the beauty of this country. These people (BJP) do not believe in democracy, diversity.” Bills providing for simultaneous elections across the country were introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday after a heated debate. Opposition parties called the draft laws – a Constitution Amendment Bill and an ordinary bill – an attack on the federal structure. However, the government rejected this charge. The bills were introduced after the opposition demanded a division of votes.
