Will not let bulldozer justice run on parliamentary system
The opposition has launched a scathing attack on the government as soon as the new criminal laws came into force. Accused the ruling party of forcibly passing laws by suspending MPs and claimed that major parts of the laws are “cut, copy and paste work”. The Indian Justice Code, Indian Civil Defense Code and Indian Evidence Act, passed in Parliament last December, have been criticized by opposition leaders, who claim that they were introduced in Parliament without adequate discussion and debate. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said in a social media post that after the political and moral setback in the election, Modi ji and BJP are pretending to respect the Constitution, but the truth is that the three laws of the criminal justice system that come into force from today were forcibly passed by suspending 146 MPs. He said that India will no longer allow this ‘bulldozer justice’ to run on the parliamentary system. Kharge was referring to the winter session of Parliament, in which about two-thirds of the opposition MPs in both houses were suspended. The mass suspensions took place amid opposition protests against the Parliament security breach. Congress leader P Chidambaram alleged that 90-99 per cent of the new laws are “cut, copy and paste work” and the government could have achieved the same result with some amendments to existing laws. “Yes, there are some reforms in the new laws and we have welcomed them. They could have been introduced as amendments,” Chidambaram said in a post on .x. On the other hand, there are many regressive provisions. Some of the changes are prima facie unconstitutional. Chidambaram also criticised the government for not addressing the criticisms raised by MPs, law scholars and lawyers and not holding meaningful debates in Parliament.
