PM Modi said on crimes against women amid Kolkata rape-murder, need for fast decision
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that the country needs fast decision in cases of crimes against women to ensure the safety of women. He said that atrocities against women and safety of children are a matter of serious concern for the society. The PM’s remarks came amid outrage over the rape-murder of a woman doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata. PM Modi said “There are many laws in the country addressing the issue of women’s safety. The Fast-Track Court Act was passed in 2019, under which witness statement centers were set up. District monitoring committees play an important role. We must ensure that these committees are further strengthened and fast decisions are given in cases related to women’s safety. Addressing an event in Delhi on the completion of 75 years of the Supreme Court, he said, “Today atrocities against women, safety of children… are a matter of serious concern for the society. Many stringent laws have been made in the country for the safety of women, but we need to make it more proactive.” He stressed, “The faster the decisions are taken in cases related to atrocities against women, the more assurance of safety will be given to half the population.”
