Constitution Amendment Bill is a step to weaken democracy, government should reconsider: Mayawati

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati on Thursday termed the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill as a step to weaken democracy and urged the central government to reconsider it. Mayawati said in a post on ‘X’, “The 130th Constitution Amendment Bill introduced by the central government in Parliament yesterday (Wednesday) amid heavy uproar clearly seems to weaken democracy in the political situation prevailing in the country for the last few years and the public fears that the ruling parties will mostly misuse it for their own benefit, selfishness and malice.” She said, “Therefore, our party does not agree with this bill at all. The government must reconsider it in the interest of the country’s democracy and constitution.” The Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025 provides for the removal of the Prime Minister, ministers and chief ministers from office on charges of serious crimes. Opposition members vehemently opposed this bill and said that the proposed law was against the Constitution and the spirit of federalism.
