Undeclared emergency in the country: Ashok Gehlot

Launching a scathing attack on the BJP on Thursday, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot accused the ruling party at the Centre of weakening the Constitution and democracy in the country. Ashok Gehlot said that the Chief Minister of Rajasthan is unable to understand, the public is very upset. The complaints of the people are not being heard. He claimed that the officials are not even listening to the MLAs. Earlier, the officials used to fear that a complaint might be lodged against them. Describing the current situation as an undeclared emergency, the senior Congress leader said that the actions of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reflect the systematic erosion of democratic values in the last 11 years. In a post on X, he said, “It is ironic that BJP governments are celebrating ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’. It is like a lecture on honesty by a dishonest person.” Gehlot alleged that civil liberties, freedom of the press and the voice of the opposition are being suppressed in the country. He said that the current situation in India can be described in only two words – ‘undeclared emergency’. The Constitution may not have been suspended and neither has the President made any formal announcement, but efforts are on to suppress people’s rights, freedom of expression and the voice of the opposition. Gehlot accused the BJP-led central government of using investigative agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against opposition leaders and criminalizing dissent.
