Jamiat supports caste census, appeals to Muslims: Madani says it is a social and political need

Strongly supporting the upcoming caste-based census, Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind President Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani called the exercise essential to promote justice, inclusive governance and equitable resource distribution in India. Maulana Madani emphasised that the caste-based census has gone beyond a routine government process. “It is now an urgent social and political need,” he said, highlighting that the data collected will have a direct impact on policy making, especially in areas such as reservation, social welfare and development schemes. He emphasised that accurate data will help ensure fair access to benefits and government schemes, especially for marginalised communities that have been ignored for a long time. Urging full cooperation, Madani appealed to all Muslims across the country to actively participate in the census process. He called upon every Muslim family to ensure that their caste identity is recorded correctly, saying this information is crucial for future policy decisions affecting the community. He also appealed to local branches of the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, Muslim organisations, religious institutions and community leaders to play an active role in educating people about the long-term implications of the census and assisting them through the process. Addressing potential concerns, Maulana Madani clarified that supporting a caste-based census is not against the Islamic principle of equality. “While Islam upholds the idea of a society based on equality, the ground reality is that a large section of Indian Muslims are socially and economically backward,” he said. He called for a moral and constitutional commitment to uplift the most disadvantaged sections of society, especially the backward and under-represented Muslim groups.
