Air India has confirmed that 241 people on board its London-bound plane died when it crashed soon after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday. The aviation company said in a statement issued late Thursday night, “We are sad to inform that out of the 242 people on board, 241 have been confirmed dead.” The statement said that the only survivor is a British citizen of Indian origin and is being treated in the hospital. Air India’s London-bound plane crashed in a medical college campus here minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon. There were 242 people on board the plane, including two pilots and 10 crew members. Apart from the people on board the plane, many others also lost their lives in the accident. At least five MBBS students, a PG resident doctor and the wife of a super-specialist doctor of BJ Medical College were killed and 60 medical students injured when a London-bound Air India plane crashed into the college campus in Ahmedabad on Thursday. Air India confirmed that 241 passengers on board the plane also died in the deadly accident, with only one survivor. The development of those affected in the medical college campus was announced by the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA). FAIMA national vice-president Dr Divyansh Singh said search operations were still on at the crash site and many people were feared trapped under the debris. “The bodies that have been found are completely burnt,” he said. “So far, at least five medical students of Ahmedabad’s BJ Medical College, a PG resident doctor and the wife of a super-specialist doctor have died and over 60 medical students have been injured,” Singh said. Air India has confirmed that its flight AI-171, flying from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick on June 12, 2025, was involved in a tragic accident. The aircraft, a 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, took off from Ahmedabad at 1:38 pm. There were 230 passengers and 12 crew members on board, a total of 242 people. The passengers included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian national.
