Farooq Abdullah appeals to tourists to return
National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah on Saturday called for the return of tourists to Jammu and Kashmir in a big way, saying their presence would be a big slap on the face of terrorists and a proof of the region’s resilience. Addressing a condolence meeting in Pahalgam, Dr Abdullah expressed solidarity with the bereaved family and praised the people’s unity in the face of adversity. Referring to those who try to disrupt peace in the region, he said, “Their faces will turn black because of the unity and resilience of the people.” Farooq Abdullah reiterated that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are not afraid. He said, “We are not afraid. Jammu and Kashmir is ours and we will cherish and build this beautiful land that Allah has given us.” He said the situation is normal. More and more tourists should come here. They should not be afraid. ‘Jo dar gaya woh mar gaya’ (one who got afraid is dead). I appeal to the people to definitely come to Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Srinagar and Katra to visit Mata Vaishno Devi. We are tired of terrorism. It is necessary to end terrorism and whatever steps the Prime Minister takes for this, we are with him and waiting for it. Abdullah supported the local demand to rename the Higher Secondary School after the deceased and assured the people present that the party will place this demand before the administration. He said, “Insha Allah, we will place it before the government and the school will not only be renamed but will also be further developed.” Calling upon the people of Jammu and Kashmir to unite, he urged for greater public participation in honouring the memory of the deceased. “Let the enemies of peace see our resolve. We will not back down.” Dr Abdullah also stressed the importance of development of neglected areas and expressed hope that the government and local representatives will work towards comprehensive progress in the region.
