CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s statement on Waqf Act protests
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the state remained largely peaceful despite limited protests against the recently passed Waqf Amendment Act. He praised the Assam Police for their effective preparations and highlighted the communal harmony of the state ahead of the Bohag Bihu festival. Taking to social media, Sarma lauded the Assam Police for maintaining law and order and expressed gratitude for the collective spirit of the people of the state who are preparing to celebrate Bohag Bihu. “Despite having nearly 40% Muslim population, the situation in Assam remained peaceful today, except for sporadic protests at three places, each involving not more than 150 participants, against the Waqf Amendment Act,” the chief minister posted on Twitter. Sarma attributed the peaceful atmosphere to the proactive planning and efficient ground work of the police. He said, “I commend the Assam Police for their extensive ground work that has helped maintain peace and order. People across Assam – beyond caste, creed, community or religion – are united in spirit and are eagerly preparing to welcome our beloved Bohag Bihu with joy and harmony.” Bohag Bihu celebrations in full swing Rongali Bihu or Bohag Bihu, which marks the Assamese New Year, has brought a festive mood to Guwahati and other parts of the state. The festival, celebrated annually in the second week of April, is one of the most important cultural events in Assam. Protests and passage of Wakf Amendment Act The remarks came a day after protests were reported in several parts of the country where members of the Muslim community opposed the Wakf (Amendment) Act. President Draupadi Murmu had given her assent to the bill on April 5 after it was passed in both houses of Parliament during the Budget session. The Rajya Sabha approved the bill on April 4, with 128 votes in favour and 95 against, while the Lok Sabha passed it with 288 members supporting and 232 against. The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 aims to streamline the management of waqf properties, enhance administrative efficiency in survey and registration, and empower stakeholders for better administration of waqf properties.
